We Answered
Who are the Raging Grannies?
We are a network of older women activists who use song, humor, and creative protest to speak out on social justice issues. We wear big hats, sing in the streets, and tell the truth — loudly and joyfully.
Are you really grandmothers?
Some of us are. Some of us aren’t. “Granny” is a state of mind — wise, bold, and not afraid to make noise for what’s right.
What do you sing about?
Everything from climate justice and reproductive rights to housing, healthcare, and peace. If it’s an issue that affects people or the planet, we probably have a song about it.
Why do you use songs and costumes instead of traditional protest?
Because it works. Singing grabs attention, softens hearts, and invites people to listen — even when the message is tough. Plus, dressing like someone’s grandma and calling out injustice? That’s powerful.
How long have the Raging Grannies been around?
Since 1987! We started in Victoria, British Columbia, and now have gaggles (local groups) across the U.S., Canada, and beyond. You can read more about our history here.
What’s a gaggle?
A gaggle is what we call our local chapters. Each one chooses its own issues, writes its own songs, and does its own actions, but we share values and support each other across borders.
Do you have to audition to join?
Absolutely not. You don’t need to be a “good” singer. You just need to be willing to show up, sing out, and speak your truth. Bonus points if you own a feather boa or a big floppy hat.
How do I join the Raging Grannies?
Check out our “Join Us” page to find a gaggle near you. If there isn’t one yet, we can help you start one. Most groups welcome women 50 and older — no experience required.
Are the Raging Grannies a political group?
We’re non-partisan, but we are political. We advocate for justice, peace, and human rights, and we’re not shy about calling out policies or systems that do harm.
Do you get involved in local issues?
Yes. Every gaggle chooses the issues that matter most in their community. We might sing about rent control in one city and pipeline protests in another.
Can we use your songs for our own protest or event?
Yes! Our songs are meant to be shared. We just ask that you credit the Raging Grannies if you can, and keep the spirit of peaceful protest alive.
Where can I find your songs?
Head over to our Songs page. You’ll find lyrics by topic, with new ones added all the time by Grannies across North America.
Do you accept donations?
Some gaggles do. Check with your local group. Most of us run on love, thrift-store finds, and potluck leftovers, but a little support helps with printing songbooks or other costs.
How can I stay in touch?
You can follow us on social media, sign up for email updates, or come to a local action. We may be older, but we are not quiet, and you’re always welcome to sing along.
